The Graduate Program in Environmental and Experimental Pathology - UNIP Veterinary Medicine Graduate Program had its venue in 2003, offering a Master Degree in Veterinary Immunopathology under the direction of Prof. Dr. Maurício Garcia. After two years, Prof. Dr. Mario Mariano assumed the position. The evolution and consolidation of the Program were recognized by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, CAPES, conceding the recommendation of the Doctorate in Immunopathology on 08/06/2008. 

The origin of diseases and their consequences to the animal and human health, focusing on the environment, is achieved under the light of the One World, One Health philosophy, essential to Brazil, the country with the richest biodiversity on the planet and one of the leading exporters of animal protein and grains. Due to these particularities, Brazil is considered a Hot Spot of Emerging Infectious Diseases, mainly because agriculture advances towards the forest, enabling contact with species that transmit various infections. The current COVID-19 pandemic is the most evident example of the devastating potential of new host-parasite interactions. It exposes the need for a deeper understanding of the relationships between different animal species and the environment.

The recent challenges reported to the Veterinary area in Brazil combined with UNIP’s heterogeneous and multidisciplinary profile resulted in the alteration of the Program's name to Environmental and Experimental Pathology, or GP-EEP, in February 2012.

In 2019, Prof. Dr. Maria Anete Lallo, deputy coordinator since 2011, was indicated as the course coordinator after Prof. Dr. Mario Mariano passed away and continued to lead the group according to the philosophy implemented by the late academics.

The research fields of the GP-EEP were updated in 2018, after a readjustment of the fundamentals of the Master’s and Doctoral courses, to provide better adherence to the current needs of the Veterinary Medicine area.

The Program

A graduate student in the GP-EEP has formation in different areas of the Health, Agrarian, and Biological Sciences, which allows a multidisciplinary training that supports the development of a critical, current, innovative, and humanistic formation in the area of Environmental and Experimental Pathology under the light of the constant social demands. The interdisciplinary profile of the Collegiate and students, together with the development of basic and applied research, allows the translation of scientific knowledge to a critical and transversal view to find solutions to problems related to One Health.

Professionals trained in Health, Agrarian, and Biological Sciences, such as veterinarians, nurses, biomedical doctors, pharmacists, physiotherapists, physical education professionals, biologists, chemists, physicians, nutritionists, and related fields.

The aims of the GP-EEP are based on the excellence of scientific development and the training of qualified personnel focusing on solving current and years-to-come problems concerning the Veterinary Medicine area. New scientific knowledge that results in social and economic benefits is the approach pursued by our students. Moreover, the improvement of teaching skills and research methodologies expands knowledge, making technological innovation possible. The achievement of didactic-scientific articulation for undergraduate, middle, and elementary school teaching and its integration with graduation program awakes vocations and talents for scientific production in the future.

In addition, the GP-EEP provides the students the integration of UNIP with the local community in a cooperative relationship that benefits both the productive and the social sectors. 

High-qualified professionals who graduate from GP-EEP can propagate high standard teaching and research performance in different fields, including national and international partnerships, exchanges with other academic institutions, and initiatives in the public and third sectors.

To offer complete education to Health, Agrarian, and Biological Sciences teachers and researchers, allowing for multidisciplinary training. Allow the generation of knowledge in a critical, current, innovative, and humanistic way in the field of Environmental and Experimental Pathology, under the light of the constant demands of the society.

Consolidate the EEP program and the participation of UNIP in the scope of national and international research concerning One Health until 2025.

The University Master’s and Doctoral programs aim to develop studies and research that result in the production of knowledge that contributes to scientific advancement and improves the quality of life in the country and the world. The development of the GPs is based on innovation, transformation, and excellence, guided by two main axes:

  1. Generation of new scientific knowledge that results in social and economic benefits;
  2. Improvement of teaching, with the development of new methodologies, didactic-scientific articulation for undergraduate, secondary, and elementary schools;

Research development to expand knowledge and technological innovation; Promote integration with graduation to awaken vocations and talents for scientific production; Promote the integration of UNIP with the local community, articulating economic and the social sector in a cooperative manner, through the training of qualified professionals for teaching; high-level research, and professional performance; Establishment of national and international partnerships and exchanges with other academic institutions, business, public and third sectors, that allows continuous updating of research and postgraduate program; Identifying areas of interest and institutional vocation to create coherent, articulated, and innovative lines of research.

The University began its Post-Graduation history back in 1998 by implementing two Master’s Programs in Dentistry and Production Engineering. In 2002, two new programs were created, the Environmental and Experimental Pathology and the Communication Programs, and finally, in 2005, the Administration Program. Following the consolidation of the Master’s Programs, Doctorates in Production Engineering (2006), Environmental and Experimental Pathology (2008), Communication (2012), and Dentistry (2015) were established and reflect how compromised the University is in supporting graduate education and research.

The University research policy provides the necessary conditions for qualified scientific production aimed at the local, regional, and national demands. The Institution considers that scientific knowledge is the main asset for the sustainable and responsible economic development of a region and contributes to the training of professionals capable of proposing necessary solutions for social transformations, which include(s):

  • Supporting the creation of research groups formed by internal and external professors;
  • Establishing constant mechanisms for qualification and training of the Collegiate;
  • Developing mechanisms for promoting the interaction with the social and business communities and funding agencies;
  • Creating national and international agreements and exchanges with public and private institutions, research institutes, companies, and other institutions to develop joint projects.

The GP-EEP has a multidisciplinary and multi-professional nature, evidenced by students and professors from different areas as Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, Biology, Biomedicine, Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. The GP-EEP strategic design is based on the research/educational strategies of the UNIP (2018-2027), and the goals established for the period 2020-2025 are highlighted below:

1. Increase the visibility/solidarity and social inclusion of the GP-EEP using digital media

Justification

Digital media plays a fundamental role in expanding the social and educational impact of the content produced in the academic environment by allowing for extramural dissemination of knowledge and allowing for the approximation with other national postgraduate programs. In this context, increased visibility strengthens transparency in research and inclusion.

Actions

  • Create the Visibility/Solidarity Commission to determine actions that allow the increment of visibility of the EEP.

2. Foment the exchange of international experience

Justification

Meeting global demands that encourage the exchange of information by researchers at a global level, the collaboration of internal students and external projects provide interdisciplinary projects with the possibility of creating national and international research networks, generating publications with more significant impact, and increasing visibility.

Actions

  • Encourage student participation in international events;
  • Encourage Double Degree Ph.D.s;
  • Increase the number of courses ministered in foreign languages;
  • Actively seek the participation of international students in our program and the participation of our students in international internships;
  • Encourage bilateral Visiting Professor Programs;
  • Seek scholarships for internationalization.

3. Strengthening of evaluations for diagnosis and problem solving/improvements

Justification

The management of the Graduate Program in a multidimensional environment requires the improvement of self-evaluation. In this sense, the implementation of self-assessment systems involving all EEP participants enables identifiying strengths and weaknesses. External reviewers will be invited to evaluate the program, avoiding endogeny.

Actions

  • Strengthen the Self-Evaluation Committee;
  • Strengthen the self-evaluation instruments;
  • Invite reviewers ad hoc to promote the independent evaluation of the EEP.

  • Specialized library, structured to support teaching and research, featuring sector libraries with a central information unit, interconnecting all campuses, via the intranet.
  • Research and Technology Center, located on the Campus Indianópolis and composed of several laboratories
    • Pathological Anatomy Laboratory - has adequate infrastructure for histological processing of material from biopsy or necropsy, both for diagnostic and research purposes. Histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques are also available.
    • Laboratory for Experimentation in Homeopathy - basic and applied research is done on ultra dilutions and homeopathy. From raw material acquired from sources accredited by the ANVISA, different homeopathic potencies can be automatedly produced in the laboratory for immediate use in animals or cell cultures.
    • Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory: provides support for different researches. It is divided into three sub-areas: Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, and Infectious Agents Research. Laboratories have equipment for applying molecular biology techniques aimed at diagnosis and research with microorganisms
    • Cell Culture Laboratory - the structure allows the maintenance of permanent cell lines such as RK, Vero, MDCK cells, macrophages, melanoma tumor cells, and breast adenocarcinoma cells, creating a structure for the development of several experimental projects.
    • Animal Experimentation Laboratory (SPF) and Aquatic Animal Facility - the vivarium follows international requirements for maintaining rats and mice for experimentation under SPF (specific pathogen-free) conditions. Several models of behavioral, toxicity, infectious, oncologic, and developmental studies were standardized. Recently, the Aquatic Animal Facility was set up, giving support to an increasing demand for biological models to replace conventional animals, making it possible to expand research using the model zebrafish.
    • Image Laboratory – images are recorded by fluorescence microscopy.
    • Flow Cytometry Laboratory – from the flow cytometer, experiments are carried out to improve cell techniques for studies in immunology and pathology.
  • Veterinary Hospital - located on the Campus Anchieta, provides a substantial subsidy for developing the Program's research, enabling research with small-size companion animals and medium and large animals
  • UNIP's Center for Research in Biodiversity – NPBio-UNIP, located on Campus Paulista, aims to prospect pharmacological activities from Brazilian plant natural products.
    • UNIP Herbarium – more than 10,000 specimens of the Brazilian flora can be consulted, particularly those native to the Amazon Rainforest.
    • Plant Processing Laboratory - located in Manaus, the initial plant processing is made before being sent to Sao Paulo to be extracted.
    • UNIP Extraction Laboratory – the plant extracts used in the experiments are obtained. The laboratory houses the UNIP Extract Library and maintains approximately 2,300 plant extracts obtained from Brazilian plants.
    • Microbiology Laboratory – the prospect of the antimicrobial activity of plant extracts against human and veterinary interest microorganisms is developed under high-throughput techniques.
    • Antitumor Screening Laboratory – cytotoxicity experiments against tumor and normal cells as MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, PC-3, NCI-H460, KM-12, SF-295, RPMI-8226, MCF-10A, and FGH are carried out.
    • Phytochemistry Laboratory – extract fractionation and natural product isolation are developed in the facility.
  • Structural and Functional Ecology Laboratory - located on the Campus Sorocaba, the structure allows for research in different areas of ecology and environment, maintenance and analysis of samples, having a structure for the development of several experimental projects.

    a) Partnership: Prof. Dr. Luciano Freitas Felicio - Laboratory of Reproductive Behavior Neurobiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, University of Sao Paulo. Project involved: Autism and dopaminergic system - analysis of sex differences, molecular and behavioral aspects.
    b) Partnership: Prof. Dr. Claudia Madalena Mori - Laboratory of Animal Models, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, University of Sao Paulo. Project involved: Studies with spontaneous and chemically induced mutant mice.
    c) Partnership: Prof. Dr. Helenice de Souza Spinosa – Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, University of Sao Paulo. Project involved: Exposure of dams to fluoxetine during lactation disturbs maternal behavior but had no effect on the offspring behavior.

  11. Prof. Dr. Welber Senten Smith
    a) Partnership: Prof. Dr. Miguel Petrere Jr – Postgraduate Program in Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries – UFPA. Project involved: Reproductive biology of migratory fish from the Sorocaba river basin as subsidies for the maintenance of free stretches of rivers.

The self-evaluation process has guided the Program's changes since its venue in 2003 up to now. By changing the name of the research themes of the Graduate Program in Environmental and Experimental Pathology, it was possible to apply and probe the basis of the One Health concept. So, the GP_EEP goals changed due to the need to increase the quality of scientific knowledge for the Veterinary Medicine area. Thus, goals such as increasing the number and quality of projects developed, seeking internationalization, and extramural cooperation has been achieved. It has increased the program score given by CAPES to 5.0.

Today, the GP-EEP has a unique vocation, profile, and personality in Veterinary Medicine that is constantly being supported by the One World, One Health concept. The multidisciplinary Collegiate, composed of veterinarians, biologists, pharmacists, and biomedicine professionals, who have brought unique and complementary experiences and competencies to characterize the Program's profile, enables the multidisciplinarity necessary to provide the student with a training of excellence.

The current profile of the Program is closely related to the guidelines of the UNIP Institutional Development Plan (IDP), which guides its role in Brazilian Veterinary Medicine. In conjunction with the IDP - UNIP, periodic quality assessments are made with the Collegiate, student staff, and employees. Currently, the GP-EEP developed a query in the Google Forms platform, which was available to teachers, students, and employees. The aspects addressed in the questionnaire were defined by the Evaluation Committee, composed of representatives of the three categories of participants. Based on the results, the Evaluation Committee communicated to the Collegiate, which implements the improvements through its Coordinator and the Graduate General Coordination.
