Experimental Models in Laboratory Animals Behavior

Syllabus

Behaviors are natural processes proper of living organisms, such as breathing, digesting, etc., driven by environmental and genetic factors rather than dimensionless ones. Thus, knowing animal behavior on controlled conditions may be an extremely valuable tool for science, e.g. from the understanding of drug effect, even to the study of neuropsychiatric disorders. Every kind of lab animal has its peculiarities, use, and disadvantages. Mice, rats, primates, and even fish are routinely made use of for behavioral analysis. It is important to know how to differentiate them for an ideal choice. It is, too, important to know handling, facility, regulatory, and bio-safety notions, and any other factors interfering in animal behavior analysis. Specific content: Introduction to animal research and behavior; classic behavioral study patterns on rats, mice, and zebrafish; behavioral study on lab animals for depression, autism, anxiety, and ailing behavior, among others.
